Flex vs. Extend While Playing the Classical Guitar |
|
|
|
Flexion & Extension of the Fingers
- Flexion, for guitar players, is the closing of the fingers into the hand
- Extension is the opening of the fingers away from the hand
- The movement of making a fist is a rough guide to how the fingers move when playing the guitar
Example Explained
The fingers in the above example are completely flexed on the left and completely extended on the right.
Example Explained
The "i" finger is flexed at the tip and middle joints but extended at the knuckle joint.
Many beginning players attempt to move in this fashion.
This is incorrect, and the most efficient movement is when the joints are moving in the same direction.
Example Explained
The mid-range of motion is pictured above.
The fingers are neither flexed nor extended but relaxed somewhere in between.
This mid-range is where all movement begins and ends while playing the classical guitar.
