The Action Exercise

  • Places the fingers on the strings in preparation of release
  • Gives the fingers a feeling for how much power is needed to move the string to sound
  • Builds finger independence

Action Steps

  1. Place right hand fingers p, i, m, & a on strings , , , & respectively
  2. Starting with i, move finger to bend the string but not release it
  3. Relax to starting position
  4. Repeat individually with fingers and thumb as many times as needed

Example Explained

The starting position is on the left with the action position on the right.

Keep all fingers touching the strings during the action movement of an individual finger.

Watch that the tip joint does not collapse during the action movement.

Move p from the thumb wrist joint.
