Rest vs. Free Stroke

  • Rest stroke and free stroke are highly debated among classical guitarists
  • It is fact that the free stroke is used more often than the rest stroke
  • A free stroke has only been discuss thus far in the classical guitar lessons tutorials
  • The rest stroke has the same basic movement as the free stroke
  • A rest stroke "rests" on the adjacent string after release and before re-planting

Setting up for a rest stroke on the guitar

  1. Place i finger on string as though you are preparing to play a free stroke
  2. Without moving your arm or wrist extend the i finger to string
  3. Play the first string at the newly formed angle and your finger will come to rest on
    string
  4. Move from your elbow to return the i finger to string and you will begin to feel the difference between the rest and free stroke positioning
  5. Try with each of the right hand fingers and then move to alternation as in the previous chapter
