Building Good Habits for Playing the Classical Guitar

  • It is always best to begin with the simple and move to more complex
  • Scratching begins good habits of movement without actually playing the guitar
  • Only when the scratching movement is habitual should one move to placing it on the guitar

Scratching Steps

  1. Place right hand fingers on the tips on a flat surface (table or even you knee)
  2. Scratch with one finger at a time and return to starting position
  3. Keep non-moving fingers still during the exercise

Example Explained

The set position is on the left and the scratching is on the right with the i finger.

Keep all fingers in contact with the surface at all times.

Move the little (c or x finger) with the anular (ring) finger.

Keep joints moving in the same direction (all flex or all extend).
