Arms & Legs Positions for Playing the Classical Guitar Print E-mail

<<Previous ChapterNext Chapter>>

Position of the Arms

  • Arms should fall evenly on both sides of the body of the guitar
  • Neck of the guitar must be pushed slightly away from left shoulder (bringing guitar body closer to stomach) to allow right arm access to the strings
  • However, too far away from the left shoulder causes the left hand to struggle
  • Guitar's neck must not be allowed to drop too much or left hand wrist will bend uncomfortably outwards
  • There should be no tension in the right shoulder

Position of the Legs

  • When using a footstool, the left leg should be at a 90° angle from floor
  • Otherwise, both legs should be comfortable and relaxed while sitting with the guitar
  • When players tense, it sometimes appears in the legs with an unwarranted raising of the heal of the left leg
